Wow, I can’t believe it’s been nearly six months since I last posted on here! For those of you who don’t remember me, I’m Poppy and I’m back after an unplanned blogging hiatus. You must be wondering what has kept me so busy that I haven’t been posting, right? Well, prepare to find out…
I’ve been abroad twice in the last six months, despite my fears of flying. The first trip I took was fieldwork for my Geography degree in the eternal city of Rome. This of course made quite a few of my friends on less exciting courses extremely jealous! The aim of our trip was to learn about and experience first-hand the culture of Rome, including its illustrious history, the beautiful architecture and the wonderful food – that’s right, we were actually being encouraged by our lecturers to eat as much pizza, pasta and gelato as we could handle! I fell head over heels for the city and its rich culture, I’ll definitely be returning when my bank balance allows it.
The second was a trip for my 21st birthday, and I was lucky enough to jet off to Florida with my parents and my boyfriend for two weeks. We all had a fantastic holiday full of sun, sea and shopping. I went to Jo-Ann five times whilst we were there, and returned with a suitcase nearly bursting full of sewing patterns as a result. We of course ate some really tasty food over there too, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much easier it had become to find vegetarian options in restaurants since I last went to the USA four years ago. I especially enjoyed the delicious Ma Po Tofu at P.F. Chang’s, and I’ve found myself pining for Chipotle and Taco Bell ever since I came home! Does anyone else wish Chipotle did transatlantic deliveries?
The last six months haven’t been all glamour and jet-setting though. In fact I’ve actually spent the majority of my time hunched over a desk, either smashing out university essays mere hours before the deadline or, more excitingly, selfishly sewing myself some new clothes. I have at least 10 projects I’m looking forward to sharing with you all in Sewing Sunday posts over the coming weeks, but in case you can’t wait that long, here’s a sneak peak to whet your appetites…
I’m looking forward to getting back to posting regularly, since I really do love writing on Poppy alla Norma, but you may notice a few changes. Firstly, don’t be expecting brand collaborations any time soon. I have enjoyed the collaborations I have done, but I want to focus on blogging for me, not for anyone else. I didn’t like having deadlines to meet and brands to impress, I’d much rather march to the beat of my own drum! I’m not saying that you’ll never see me feature any brands on the blog ever again, but for the moment, I’m declaring myself as PR unfriendly.
Secondly, the photography. My word, the photography. I have such a love/hate relationship with taking photos for the blog. As you have almost certainly noticed if you’re a long-term reader of Poppy alla Norma, I am no photographer. It’s a blessing if I get my photos in focus to be perfectly honest! In the last few posts before my hiatus I was really trying hard to improve my photography, but it was taking its toll on me. I always felt like my pictures weren’t good enough to compete with other bloggers out there, and it put me off posting altogether. Some blogs look more professional than glossy magazines, and it really got me down that my posts never lived up to that standard.
I’ve decided now that I’m not going to beat myself up about my imperfect photography. There are so many things I’ve really wanted to post about and abandoned, because I felt as though my photography skills weren’t up to scratch. It’s hard not to compare yourself to other bloggers, especially when you’re starting out, but I’ve felt much better about my own output when I haven’t been wondering why my posts don’t look as good or get as many comments as those by other bloggers. Now that I’ve stopped worrying about my pictures I feel so much more free to post!
With that in mind, I sincerely hope you enjoy reading what I have in store for the next few days, weeks and months! You’ll probably have to deal with more iPhone photography but you’re cool with that, right?
So, what have I been missing? Please send me links to your favourite blog posts of the last six months!
