Review: The Melt Crowd by Flamingo Candles (July Box)

Review: The Melt Crowd by Flamingo Candles (July Box)

It’s been a while since I posted, hasn’t it? Between working and sorting through everything in my bedroom for the first time in nine years (!), I haven’t had any time for blogging! Nevertheless, I’m back with a review of possibly the nicest-smelling monthly subscription box around.

I have to admit, since moving to university I have become a total candle addict. Whenever I end up in the homeware section of a supermarket, I make a beeline towards the home fragrance section and I can never seem to resist throwing a couple of votives or tea lights into our trolley. So when I heard about a new monthly wax melt subscription box, I had to find out more.

The creator of the box is Flamingo Candles, a British cruelty-free company offering quirky candles made from eco-friendly soy wax. The box retails at an amazing £10 per month, which includes delivery, 8 wax melts, a 20% off discount code and a tart burner with your first shipment.

When I first opened the box I was instantly hit with a beautiful smell, a heady combination of all 8 tarts. Even through the paper the scents are very strong, and I’m delighted to confirm that when burning, none of the fragrance intensity is lost, not at all like some cheaper candles which you can only smell when your nose is less than six inches away.

The scents have a summery, tropical feel to them, and out of the eight tarts, there’s only one that I’m not so keen on. There are two Melt Crowd exclusive melts, Green Tomato Leaf and Island Breeze, but the rest are available through the website so don’t despair if you missed the July box! I’ll tell you what though, I have a newfound respect for people who describe the smell of perfume; it is so hard to describe how something smells! I promise I’ll try my best…

The first three melts are Raspberry & Salted Caramel, Cucumber & Melon and Mojito. Raspberry & Salted Caramel smells exactly like spun sugar or the top of a crème brûlée, with a slight hint of something else. The undertone doesn’t smell like raspberry to me though, it smells more like Lush’s Creamy Candy Bubble Bar. I’m not a massive fan of the Raspberry & Salted Caramel to be honest, it’s a little too sugary-smelling for me. However, if you like toffee and caramel you’ll love this one. I wasn’t keen on the sound of Cucumber & Melon as I hate both foods with a passion, but the smell is clean and fruity – a great combination. You can’t smell the cucumber particularly, it just adds a fresh note to the fruity melon scent. Mojito mostly smells of sweetened fresh mint, but there is a subtle base note of lime, ensuring the melt doesn’t smell too much like toothpaste. Mojitos are my cocktails of choice, so I’m excited to burn this one!

The next three are Green Tomato Leaf, Lemon Curd and Oriental Lotus & Rose Otto. Green Tomato Leaf smells exactly like my grandad’s greenhouse in the height of summer, when his home-grown tomatoes are ripe and ready for picking. It’s unlike any candle I’ve ever smelt before, and it’s such a shame that it’s a Melt Crowd exclusive as I’d otherwise be tempted to buy a full size! To me, Lemon Curd smells exactly like sherbet lemons – when burnt the room smells like a sweet shop, and that makes the child in me extremely happy. Oriental Lotus & Rose Otto is a light floral scent, and smells like fabric softener to me. I love the smell of freshly laundered clothes, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy burning this one.

The final two melts are Pink Lemonade and Island Breeze. To me Pink Lemonade smells more like strawberry laces, but that is no bad thing at all. It’s fun, fruity and full of fragrance – what more could you want? Island Breeze reminds me of holidays and hotels by the beach in Florida, it’s clean with a slight hint of something tropical. I really like this one, it’s the perfect summer scent.

So, would I recommend The Melt Crowd? Absolutely! The value for money is incredible, especially when you consider the quality of the melts you’re getting. I will definitely continue with my subscription, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the Parma Violet melt makes an appearance in the August box! I can’t even tell you how excited I got when I found that one…
